Από τους "Times" προτείνουν μείωση της εθνικής μας επικράτειας....

Τα παρακάτω που παραθέτω τα λένε στα σοβαρά εκεί στους TIMES δεν κάνουν καμία πλάκα:

"Fine, but it fails to address the guts of the problem. Greece (and Spain and Portugal and Ireland) lived high off the hog, because its citizens believed someone else was paying. Mr Van Rompuy needs a mechanism to ensure that eurozone citizens understand that every bill will end up on their mats.

Mischievous German MPs suggested that Greece sell its islands to pay off the debts. It is not so stupid. After two world wars, Europeans assume that boundaries are sacrosanct, but in previous centuries, transactions over territory were not uncommon. Consider the purchase from France of Louisiana by the United States in 1803 for $15 million and, more than half a century later, the sale of Alaska by Russia to the United States for $7.2 million.

My proposal is that the price for budgetary misbehaviour should be a temporary loss of national territory. A segment of land of appropriate size would be transferred to a neighbouring state and held in trust in return for financial assistance until the debt was repayed. Similar to a bank repo transaction, soil, instead of stocks, would be pledged for loans. For example, were France in severe breach of its fiscal obligations, it might lose Alsace-Lorraine to Germany. Likewise, Italy would lose Lombardy to France and we know where Austria might end up.

This effort in Brussels to secure better governance is really about greater union. What better way to demonstrate faith in the EU than to move a frontier."
